About the Style

Black & Grey Tattoos by Maddi

Black and grey tattooing uses black ink in different strengths to build up shading, from deep shadows to soft highlights. It suits realism portraits, animals, statues, skulls and almost any subject where light and texture matter. Done well, it gives a tattoo depth and a classic look that ages gracefully.

My black and grey work at Black Hope Tattoo in Colchester ranges from realism portraits and lions to angel wings, stone pillars and dinosaur skulls. Every piece is drawn for the client, with the composition planned around the shape of the body so it reads clearly from a distance as well as up close. Many pieces also include flowers, which you can see more of on my floral tattoos page.

Placement

Getting the Size Right

Portraits

Faces need room for detail. Upper arm, thigh and calf placements give portraits the space they need to stay recognisable for years.

Animals

Lions, snakes and other animals work well wrapping around the arm or running down the leg.

Statues and Architecture

Pillars, statues and stonework suit long placements like the forearm, shin or spine.

Combined Pieces

Larger designs that mix several elements can be built up over more than one session.

Black and grey relies on contrast between light and dark areas. As tattoos age, fine shading softens, so I plan the contrast from the start to keep your piece readable long term.

Good to Know

Planning Your Black & Grey Tattoo

Black and grey work relies on contrast, so size matters. Detailed pieces like portraits need enough room for the shading to stay readable as the tattoo ages, and I will suggest a size that keeps it looking sharp for years.

For portraits, send the clearest, best-lit photo you have. Good light and a sharp face make a big difference to the finished piece.

How It Works

From Idea to Tattoo

  1. Send an Enquiry

Use the booking form or DM @maddi.ink with your idea, where it is going, roughly how big, and any reference photos. Reference images help far more than a long description.

  2. Quote and Deposit

I will reply with a price estimate and available dates. Paying the deposit secures your slot, and it comes off the final price on the day.

  3. Design

For custom work I draw your design before the appointment. On the day we check the size and placement with a stencil and adjust until it sits right on your body.

  4. Tattoo Day

Eat a proper meal beforehand, stay hydrated and wear clothes that give easy access to the area.

  5. Aftercare

You leave with the area wrapped and clear aftercare instructions. My full aftercare guide is on this site if you need a reminder at home.

Questions

Black & Grey Tattoo FAQs

Can you tattoo a portrait from my photo?

Yes. Send the clearest, best-lit photo you have. A sharp image with good light on the face makes a huge difference to the finished tattoo.

Does black and grey fade faster than colour?

No. Well-placed black and grey with good contrast holds up very well. Sun cream once it has healed is the best way to keep any tattoo looking fresh, as covered in my aftercare guide.

Can a large piece be split over several sessions?

Yes. Bigger work is often done over more than one session, giving your skin time to heal in between.

Will black and grey cover an old tattoo?

Sometimes. It depends on how dark and large the old tattoo is. Send me a photo and I will give you an honest answer.
